Middle Years Programme (MYP)
What is the Middle Years Programme (MYP)?
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is for those aged from 11 to 16, in principle, and is designed to help them learn about the connections between their studies in the past and society. It is available in any language.
In the MYP, students study the following eight subjects. All students work on these subjects over five years of the programme period.
- Language and literature
- Language acquisition
- Individuals and societies
- Science
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Physical and health education
- Design
The eight subjects are related to the following five areas of interaction (AOI) beyond existing subjects and focus on human commonalities in a manner similar to the transdisciplinary themes of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). These AOI are commonly applied across all subjects, aiming to encourage students to increase their awareness of the connections between the subjects and the real world, rather than viewing each subject in isolation as unrelated to other subjects or the real world.
Approaches to learning
Community and community service
Human creativity
Diverse environment
Health education and social education
The MYP presents knowledge as integrated and holistic through these, and students are expected to raise awareness of wider and more complicated global issues.
If you would like to deepen your understanding of the MYP in Japanese, please read the official guidebook, which is posted in the “MYP Guide” of “Resources for Schools in Japan” on the official IB website.
